The Rev. Dr. Clay Schmit
My Story
The Rev. Dr. Clayton Schmit, known as Clay, serves as the Academic Dean of Emmanuel Lutheran Global Seminary (ELGS), where he plays a pivotal role in shaping theological education and mentoring future church leaders. An ordained pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), Dr. Schmit has built a distinguished career balancing pastoral ministry, academic teaching, and research.
He has served congregations in North Dakota, California, and Wisconsin while also teaching at esteemed institutions such as Duke Divinity School (Durham, NC) and Fuller Theological Seminary (Pasadena, CA). His teaching experience extends globally, having instructed at seminaries across Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Before joining ELGS, Dr. Schmit held a presidential/provost position at Lutheran Southern Theological Seminary (Columbia, SC). His longstanding affiliation with Emmanuel Lutheran Church has been instrumental in shaping the seminary’s vision and global mission.
In addition to his theological work, Clay is deeply involved in the arts. He has authored books exploring the relationship between theology and the arts, composed and published church music, directed choirs, and led European performing tours. He has also produced documentary and educational films.
Dr. Schmit is married to Carol, an attorney, and they have two accomplished children. Their daughter resides in Asheville, NC, married and serving as a therapist specializing in working with autistic children. Their son works as a design/build architect in Central California.
